“Back in the early days of Blood Bikes Cumbria I admired the organisation from afar. I read an article in the local newspaper about the Blood on Board service that was starting with GNAAS and how a car would be used as part of the service. I contacted the chair at the time to ask if they’d consider allowing me to join as a driver rather than a rider, I’m not a motorcyclist, a few of months later in 2015 I became Blood Bikes Cumbria’s first dedicated driver.
It’s such a rewarding thing to do, knowing that you’re making such a difference although you often don’t know the circumstances of the consignment that you’re carrying.
The most memorable job for me isn’t actually a job I was on myself but one that was carried out shortly after I joined Blood Bikes by a colleague, my son was rushed to hospital at only 8 days old he needed emergency tests of which needed to be taken through to Newcastle for analysis.
Shortly after the samples were taken from my son I saw the blood bike leaving the Cumberland infirmary heading across to Newcastle feeling so grateful that it was in the safest of hands!”
